1. Malaysia and Singapore have made progress on two new interconnections to facilitate cross-border electricity trade, reflecting both countries’ shared commitment to energy security, decarbonisation and regional growth. This announcement was made at the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Kuala Lumpur.

Second Singapore-Malaysia Interconnector

2. Singapore Energy Interconnections (SGEI), SP Group and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to conduct detailed feasibility studies for a second electricity interconnection between Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia. Building on a pre-feasibility study by SP Group and TNB that was completed in May 2025, the proposed interconnector could support up to 2 GW of capacity by 2030, complementing the existing link which allows up to 1 GW of bi-directional electricity flows.

3. The JDA exchange ceremony was witnessed by YAB Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation of Malaysia, and Dr Tan See Leng, Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology of Singapore, on 17 October 2025 at the 43rd AMEM. 

Electricity Imports from Sarawak, Malaysia

4. Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) has granted Conditional Approval (CA) to Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd (SCU), in partnership with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), to import around 1 GW of low-carbon electricity from Sarawak, Malaysia. The project, powered primarily by hydropower, has been assessed as preliminarily technically and commercially viable and is expected to commence operations around 2035, subject to final approvals and subsea cable installation. 

5. The CA was presented at two back-to-back ceremonies on 17 October 2025 witnessed by YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Premier of Sarawak, and Mr. Gan Kim Yong, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore, in Singapore, and by YAB Datuk Amar Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation of Malaysia, and Dr Tan See Leng, Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology of Singapore, in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the 43rd AMEM.
